Before touring anywhere, answer one question honestly: what do you want out of this?

  • Fitness with a point? You want live, drilling-heavy classes — not choreography.
  • Self-defense? You want arts that pressure-test against resistance (grappling especially), plus coaches who talk about awareness and avoidance, not just techniques.
  • Something for your kid? Culture and coaching quality matter triple; curriculum matters less at age seven.
  • Competition someday? You need a gym that actually fields competitors.
  • Not sure yet? That's genuinely fine — it just means you should favor a gym with multiple adult programs under one roof, so you can sample disciplines without re-shopping for gyms in six months.

Your goal becomes your filter. Every gym tour, you're asking one question: does this place serve my goal, or its own?

The 10-Minute Test

Here's the most useful tool we can give you. Take a trial class — any legitimate gym offers one — and pay attention to the first ten minutes only. Almost everything reveals itself there.

Minute 1–2: How are you greeted? Someone should know you're coming, learn your name, and pair you with the coach or an experienced member. If you're handed a waiver and ignored, you've learned how they treat beginners — and you'll be a beginner for a year.

Minute 3–5: Watch the students, not the coach. Coaches perform for visitors; students can't fake it. Are they engaged? Helping each other? Do higher belts partner with beginners willingly, or do they treat it as a chore? Student behavior is the culture, live and unfiltered.

Minute 5–8: Watch how mistakes get handled. Someone will mess up a technique — beginners always do. Does the coach correct with specifics and patience, or with humiliation? You're watching your own future on a bad day.

Minute 8–10: Check the floor. Literally. Are the mats clean? Does the room smell maintained? Mat hygiene isn't cosmetic — skin infections are real in grappling sports, and a gym that's lazy about cleaning is lazy about safety.

Long-term contracts pushed on day one. A school confident in its product lets the product sell itself. If you can't leave without a lawyer, the business model is retention-by-paperwork, not retention-by-quality. Reasonable membership agreements exist; 36-month commitments with brutal cancellation clauses do not deserve your signature.

Belts with price tags. "Black belt club." "Guaranteed belt in 24 months." Testing fees stacked on testing fees. The moment rank is a revenue product, it stops meaning anything — and you'll be surrounded by belts that can't do what their color claims.

No live training, ever. If students never practice against genuine resistance — no rolling, no sparring, nothing beyond rehearsed patterns — the skills are theater. Vague pricing. If you can't get a straight number without sitting through a "consultation," the consultation is the product.

A real beginner pathway. Fundamentals classes, a stated curriculum, coaches who can explain exactly what your first month looks like. Beginners aren't an inconvenience to good gyms — they're the lifeblood.

Coaches with verifiable credentials who still train. Competition history, verifiable rank, and — the underrated one — coaches who still get on the mats themselves. Knowledge with rust on it teaches rusty students. Students who've been there for years. Longevity is the metric gyms can't fake. Ask a few members how long they've trained there. A room with five-year students is a room people don't want to leave.

Trial classes with zero pressure. The gym says: come feel it, then decide. That confidence tells you everything about whether the product survives contact with experience.

Honest answers about what they don't do. Ask a coach "what's this gym not good at?" A serious school has an answer. A sales operation has a pivot.

  2. What's the cancellation policy, in plain English?
  3. How do beginners start? Is there a fundamentals track?

  6. Can I take a trial class — and can I watch a regular class first?

Distance beats almost everything. The perfect gym 40 minutes away loses to the very good gym 12 minutes away, every time, because the 40-minute gym slowly stops being driven to. Trust the Test, Then Commit
