Walking Through the Door Is the Hardest Part
Every black belt in the world was once a nervous beginner who didn't know what a guard pass was. If you're thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time, the biggest hurdle isn't learning techniques — it's simply showing up.
At Rising Tide MoCo MMA, we've welcomed hundreds of first-timers through our doors in Rockville. Here's exactly what your first class will look like so there are zero surprises.
What to Wear
For your first class, keep it simple:
- Athletic clothing — basketball shorts and a t-shirt work perfectly
- No zippers, buttons, or pockets — these can catch fingers and toes
- Remove all jewelry — rings, necklaces, watches, and earrings
- Bring a water bottle — you'll need it
- Flip-flops or sandals — for walking to and from the mat area
We also have loaner gear available — just let us know when you arrive.
How Class Flows
A typical beginner-friendly BJJ class at Rising Tide follows this structure:
Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)
You'll start with movement drills that get your body ready for grappling. Think hip escapes, forward rolls, and basic bodyweight exercises. Don't worry about doing them perfectly — everyone is focused on their own warm-up.
Technique Instruction (20-25 minutes)
The coach demonstrates a technique or sequence, breaking it down step by step. You'll pair up with a training partner and drill the technique at your own pace. Coaches circulate the room to help with details.
Positional Sparring or Live Rolling (15-20 minutes)
Depending on the class, you may do positional sparring (starting from a specific position) or live rolling (free sparring). As a first-timer, there's zero pressure to spar. You can watch, drill more, or try it with an experienced partner who will guide you through it.
Cool-Down
Class wraps up with stretching and a brief review. This is a great time to ask questions.
Common First-Day Concerns
"I'm not in shape enough." Nobody is "in shape" for BJJ until they start doing BJJ. Grappling uses muscles you didn't know existed. You'll get fit by training, not before.
"I'll slow everyone down." Upper belts love working with beginners. Teaching reinforces their own skills, and they remember being in your shoes.
"What if I get hurt?" Injuries are rare in a structured class environment. Coaches emphasize controlled technique, and training partners are expected to look out for each other.
"I don't know any techniques." That's literally why you're taking a class. No one expects you to know anything on day one.
Why People Get Hooked
Most people who try a single BJJ class are surprised by three things:
- It's more mental than physical. Jiu-Jitsu is often called "human chess" because it rewards problem-solving and strategy over raw strength.
- The community is welcoming. Martial arts gyms have a reputation for being intimidating, but quality academies like Rising Tide cultivate a culture of respect and encouragement.
- The workout is incredible. You'll be tired in ways a treadmill never achieved — and you won't have looked at a clock once.
