Real techniques. Live practice. No theatrics. Learn self-defense built on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and striking — the systems that actually work under pressure.
Most self-defense advice falls apart the moment someone actually resists. What works is trained skill — and trained skill comes from arts that are pressure-tested every day: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing. At Rising Tide MoCo MMA, self-defense isn't a weekend seminar. It's real training, practiced live in a safe and controlled environment, that builds escapes, awareness, and composure you can actually count on.
Real altercations are messy and close — grabs, shoves, clinches, and falls. That's why our self-defense training is built on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling: the arts that teach you to escape holds, stay on your feet or get back up, and control a stronger attacker using leverage instead of strength.
You'll start with the highest-percentage skills: escaping wrist grabs, collar grabs, and bear hugs; defending takedowns; protecting yourself on the ground; and creating distance to disengage. Striking fundamentals from boxing and kickboxing round out the picture.
Awareness and de-escalation come first in every conversation — the best self-defense is the situation you never enter. But when avoidance fails, trained skill is what's left, and we make sure yours is real.
"I had never practiced any martial arts before so was a bit skeptical, but was pleasantly surprised to see how supportive and patient the coaches are here. In particular I have worked with coaches Dallas and Joe, both are amazing with beginners and are happy to demonstrate and explain everything over and over again."
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was designed around a simple truth: with the right technique, a smaller person can escape and control a larger, stronger one. That makes it the most effective foundation for women's self-defense — and it's the heart of our women's-only Jiu-Jitsu program.
Classes are taught in a supportive, women-only environment by coaches experienced in women's training. You'll learn escapes from grabs and pins, how to use leverage and angles instead of strength, and how to stay composed under pressure — skills practiced live, at your pace, with training partners you trust.
Women are also welcome in every co-ed program. Many start in the women's-only class and branch out from there.
"Amazing welcoming gym. I had never done anything similar to MMA. The whole staff took the time to make sure I felt comfortable and confident. Definitely recommend to anyone new to the sport or looking for a positive environment to train and work with some great people."
Leverage-based techniques designed for smaller defenders, taught in a women-only environment or co-ed classes — your choice, your pace.
Late walks to the car, travel, city life — trained awareness and tested skill replace vague worry with quiet confidence.
Many parents train while their kids take youth classes — and young adults headed to college build skills that travel with them.
